5/13/17 Relationship Is Better Than Law

“Before we belonged to Jesus, we lived under the Law.  Even as Gentiles, though you did not live under the Law of Moses, you lived under the law of your culture, traditions, rituals, and the rules and ordinances of your cities and kingdoms.  These things were of the utmost importance in everyone’s lives and governed every aspect of life.  But now, having put to death with Jesus our old sinful nature, we no longer live subject to the laws of the world.  Now, we live in relationship with Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and God.  Our relationship now takes precedence over everything else in our lives.  Instead of being governed by the laws of the world, we are now governed by the love that this relationship produces in us.  So we ought not to live according to the rules of the world any longer, because we have transcended these things through Jesus.  Though we are still to follow the commandments of God, it is not because we have been commanded to do so, but because of the greatest commandments to love the Lord our God with all our hearts, minds, souls, and strength, and to love our neighbors as ourselves.  To simply follow rules because we are supposed to follow rules takes love out of the equation and produces falsehood within us.  We become as the Pharisees, striving to follow the rules for the sake of being revered by others.  When we love God and each other, we don’t have to try to obey the commandments, because everything we do for God and for each other stems from that love, fulfilling the commandments automatically.  If you love your neighbor, you will not want to hurt him in any way, but will seek to show that love any way you can.”
