1/10/16 Offered To The Jews, Accepted By The Gentiles

“Before that, He spoke through the prophet Isaiah about Israel, saying, ‘Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, only the remnant will return to God and be saved.  For He will finish the work and cut it short in righteousness, because the Lord will make a short work upon the earth.’  And even before this, Isaiah wrote, ‘Unless the Lord of the Hosts had left us a seed, we would have become like Sodom, and we would have been made like Gomorrah.’  The people of Israel have clung too tightly to the Law of Moses, believing that the Law could make them acceptable to God.  But in their zeal for the Law, they have abandoned faith, which is the only thing that can save them.  They do not understand the words God spoke through the prophet Isaiah, ‘Behold; I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and rock of offense, and whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.’  That stumbling block is Jesus, who came to set all of sin’s captives free.  And most of Israel has stumbled, because Jesus does not fit their perception of the prophesied Messiah, but also because many still believe that the Law is the only way they can be saved.  On the other hand, the Gentiles, who were not even attempting to follow the Law or to seek God, have received the salvation that they were not even seeking, because they heard Jesus’ message and came to God in faith, believing the words that were spoken to them.”
