8/3/16 It’s Not About Us, It’s About Jesus

“When I first came to you, you were people of the world, and the Holy Spirit was not yet within you.  I could not teach you using spiritual truths, because you would not be able to understand it.  I had to be careful to use words that would be understandable to you, and that would not drive you away from Jesus instead of drawing you to Him.  When you listened and gave your hearts to Him and were baptized, then the Holy Spirit came to live within you and you were able to begin to understand spiritual truths.  But still, you were as babies in Him, and so I taught you in the way I would feed you with milk, because you were not ready yet for the solid food of deeper spiritual teaching.  And from the reports I have received about you, it seems you are still not ready to progress to solid food.  You have split yourselves into factions, you are fighting amongst yourselves, you are envious of each other, and you are not living as brothers and sisters in Jesus ought to be living.  You are behaving as though you never received the Holy Spirit.  When one of you says, ‘I am of Paul,’ and another says, ‘I am of Apollos,’ is this not childish, worldly behavior?  Who is Paul, and who is Apollos?  Are we not simply the people who brought the words of Jesus to you?  Did you believe in us, or in Jesus, because of the message we brought to you?  God is the one who gave you this message.  He simply used us as the means to deliver it.  I planted the seed in your hearts, and Apollos watered it, but God made it grow.  It’s not the one who plants or waters that performs the miracle, but the one who takes that tiny, formerly dormant seed, and brings forth from it a tall, strong plant that blossoms in the right time.  The ones who do the labor, the planters and the waterers, are all one in Jesus, and He will reward each of us in the end according to the work that we do.  We are all God’s workers.  You, in whom we planted the seed of His message, are His field, or His building.  God gave me a great education to prepare me for the work that He had set aside for me to do, and made me into a master builder.  Because of His gracious gifts to me, He has allowed me to lay the foundation on which others will build.  But we must be careful how we do the building, because no other foundation can hold the building that is planned, only the foundation of Jesus our Messiah.  If anyone builds on that foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, or straw, God will know and will declare it to all on the last day.”
