The expert in Mosaic law realizes that Jesus knows what He is talking about. In that moment, his loyalty to his brother Pharisees and the plot to trap Jesus vanishes, and he finds himself being drawn to Jesus. “Rabbi, You have spoken the Truth. I know well that there is only one God, and that the most important thing we can do with our lives is to love Him with all of our hearts, souls, strength, and minds. And I understand that He desires love for Him and for our fellow human beings much more than any burnt offerings or sacrifices.” Jesus looks into the man’s eyes and sees the depth of his devotion to his God. He nods to the man and says, “You are very close to becoming a citizen of the Kingdom of Heaven.” Understanding passes between the two men as the Pharisees behind them begin to back away. They fear they have just lost another of their number to the enemy, and they need to regroup before trying anything else.
