The next day being the Sabbath, Jesus is in the synagogue. He is teaching the people when He looks over and sees a woman who looks very sad. She is sitting in the back corner of the women’s gallery, so He doesn’t have a very good view, but He sees that she is sitting in such a way that her head is almost touching her feet. He looks deep into her heart and sees the cause of her pain – an evil spirit tormenting her, keeping her in such constant pain that she has not been able to straighten her back but has been bent over almost double for 18 long years. Jesus has such compassion for this poor woman. When He is finished teaching, He goes to the woman and takes her hands in His. He bends low and looks into her sad, pain-filled eyes. “Daughter, you are set free,” He tells her. She immediately feels it. The spirit has left her – and so has the pain. Her eyes widen in wonder. Slowly, she begins to straighten her body, standing and raising her head. The room fills with gasps from onlookers. Nobody has seen this woman’s face for 18 years. Nobody has even spoken with her, believing her to be cursed by God and not wanting to share the same fate. But now, they see the radiance of her face, her dazzling smile, her eyes glistening with the joy of being set free, and all they can do is stare in awe. She kneels at Jesus’ feet and pours out her gratitude, then leaps to her feet, unable to contain her excitement any longer, and runs from the synagogue to share the joy she feels with her family.
