Some experts in God’s law from the Temple have been watching as the 70 have been telling their stories. Now one of them comes forward and presents a challenge question to Jesus, “Rabbi, what do I have to do in order to be granted entrance to the Kingdom of Heaven?” Jesus looks at him in silence for a moment, seeming to speak directly to the man’s heart. The man steps back, hesitant for a moment, then squares his shoulders and steps forward again. He will not back down. Jesus sighs and asks a question of His own, “When you read God’s law, what do you understand it to say?” The man answers without even having to think, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength, and mind, and love your neighbor as yourself.” Jesus nods and says, “That is correct. If you can do this perfectly, then you will be granted entrance to the Kingdom of Heaven.” But the man is not satisfied. He wants to test Jesus further. “But, Rabbi, who is my neighbor?” he asks.
