8/6/15 There’s Nothing Worse Than Sin…Except For Making A Child Sin

Now Jesus brings them back on topic.  “You must take care not to do anything to cause any of these little children to sin.  That is indeed a terrible crime, for the faith of a child is a precious thing.  You have heard, I’m sure, of the punishment that Caesar Augustus ordered for some of the most heinous of criminals in Rome – that of hanging a large millstone, the kind usually pulled only by donkeys or oxen, around the criminal’s neck and drowning him in the sea.  I tell you, it would be better for a man to suffer this fate than to cause one of these little children who believes in me to sin.  Sin separates the sinner from God and from all that is Good.  The nature of this world is such that all in it sin, but the world is in such pain because of that sin!  And each person who adds to the sin of the world increases his own misery and that of the world as a whole.  If you could stand with God and look down at the world, you would see the pain everywhere, and sin would lose its appeal to you.  That is my hope for all of you – to be free from the desire to sin, and help others to be free as well.  If you love sin more than you love Me, or My Father who sent Me, you will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven.  So I tell you this in warning:  if your eye, your hand, your foot, any part of your body causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away.  Because it is far better for you to enter the Kingdom of Heaven missing parts of your body than to remain whole and be condemned to spend eternity in hell, in the never-ending fires.”

Matthew 18:6-9, Mark 9:42-48
