Jesus looks at them sadly, knowing their great pride is standing in the way of their salvation. “Why do you give tradition more importance than the Commandments of God? God commands His people to honor their father and their mother, and that whoever dishonors his parents should be put to death. But you say, ‘We have given what would have gone to help our parents to the Temple instead. So we are freed from our obligation to honor our parents.’ You try to get out of following the Commandments of God through your own invented rules. You are hypocrites, you do not follow your own rules! The prophet Isaiah spoke God’s words about you when he said, ‘These people draw near to Me with their mouth, and honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’” At that, the offended Pharisses stalk off, muttering to themselves about the gall of this Man to call them hypocrites and scorn their honored traditions.
